Camping Along the Olympic Peninsula

Almost every year since I started dating my boyfriend (which has been almost 8 years now), we’ve planned at least one camping trip along the Olympic Peninsula. We usually set aside a long weekend to get away from the city to explore the beautiful west coast. In this post I’ll be sharing some of my favorite photos that I took from our last camping trip as well as some useful tips for planning your own camping adventure.

01 WHEN TO VISIT

The best time to visit is in late May to early September since the weather is usually warmer during this time of the year. However, Washington coast weather can be very fickle. In past trips the forecast would say it was going to be sunny but it ended up raining and vice versa. One thing I’ve learned over the years is to be prepared for both types of weather so bringing a rain jacket and also a pair of shorts helps a lot.

02 WHERE TO CAMP

Our favorite spot to stay is at Kalaloch Campground, which is located along the southwest coast of the Olympic Peninsula in Olympic National Park. The campground sits on a high bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. There are no camp sites on the actual beach but there are trails that lead down to it. The entire campsite is fairly large and well maintained. It’s also a pretty popular campsite so you have to book a spot at least a year in advance. You can find more info here.

03 THINGS TO SEE

One of my favorite things to do is explore Kalaloch Beach. There’s a really cool tree (pictured below) that you can find there. Some other fun beaches to check out are Ruby Beach, Second Beach, and Rialto Beach. Depending on how far out you want to drive out, there is also the Hoh Rain Forest that’s known for it’s really cool moss covered trees. There are also random trailheads scattered throughout the park.
